It is a well known fact that the higher the altitude for grape growing the better the quality of the grape produced. The cooling effect of being at high altitude allows the grapes to ripen more slowly, which helps to concentrate the flavours. The land at LFE rises to a height of 800m above sea level, giving a great view of the Andes, and grapes which achieve a superior quality. Elevating Quality is our company message to the world, our wines are of the highest quality and this recognises the importance we place on the customer.

''We are a strong family with very strong family values,
and this translates into our wines."
Luis Felipe Edwards SNR

This commitment to quality can be demonstrated, for example, by the new high altitude plantings. In 2005, 90 hectares of vines were planted at high altitude between 800 and 1000 metres - representing the highest plantings in the Colchagua Valley. The vineyards sites have been carefully selected and split into 91 individual plots using infrared imaging to match 11 different grape varieties to the appropriate plot.

In addition, LFE also has one of the lowest average yields in Chile of just 9 tonnes per hectare across all their vineyards, with yields as low as 4 tonnes per hectare from the high altitude sites.

All of the above represents a huge investment into the long term quality of the wines:

''This is just the start of a very long journey. It takes time to build real quality -
fortunately we don't answer to shareholders, just consumers!"
